The Wagner boys improved to 4-1 on the year with an exciting overtime win over Gregory on Tuesday night. Wagner jumped out to an 18-13 lead after the first period and led 29-23 at the half. It looked like he Red Raiders were going to pull away from Gregory in the second half leading by as many as 14 points early in the fourth quarter but the Gorillas had other ideas. Gregory came storming back late in the fourth quarter to take a 1 point lead with less than a minute left. Toby Zephier got fouled on a drive and made a free throw tie the game at 52 and send it into overtime. Wagner scored 11 points in the extra 4 minutes to win the game 63-58. Toby Zephier led the way for Wagner with 21 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 deflections and 3 steals. Dustin Honomichl added 10 points and 4 rebounds, Nolan Carda had 10 points and a team high 13 rebounds, Marcus Zephier scored 9 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 6 steals, Simon Freier scored 6 points Alex Cournoyer 4 and Jaden Peters 2.

Both teams would start out cold as Parkston would finally score 3 minutes into the game and take an early 5-0 lead. Wagner would then connect on 4 triples and finish the quarter on a 13-6 run holding a 13-11 lead. The 2nd and 4th quarters would haunt the Raiders as they would only score a total of 12 points combined and fall to the Trojans 55-40. Wagner would be led by Abby Brunsing’s 16 points, 9 boards and 2 assists. Macy Koupal would add 7 points, 6 boards and dish out 2 assists. Eve Zephier would chip in 6 points. Shalayne Nagel would net 4 points, grab 4 boards and dish out a team high 5 assists. Caydynce Olson would also chip in 4 points for the Raiders. Kya Kjeldgaard and Ashlyn Koupal would round out the scoring with 2 and 1 points. Wagner would shoot 15-45 for 33%. Parkston would go 17-41 for 42%. The game would be won on the charity stripe as Parkston would convert on 17-20 while Wagner would go 5-8. Wagner would get out rebounded 32-25 and commit 19 turnovers compared to Parkston’s 13.

Jayla Bruguier would come away with a steal and pass ahead to Ashlyn Koupal for the Raiders to take a 28-26 lead into the half. The Raiders would have a stellar third quarter connecting on 4 triples. 2 from Macy Koupal and 1 apiece from Jayla Bruguier and Abby Brunsing. They would out score Gregory 22-8 and take a 50-34 lead. The lead would never really change the 4th quarter with Wagner winning 64-50. Wagner would hit 24-57 from the floor for 42%. Gregory would convert 15-54 from the field for 28%. Wagner would shoot 8-10 from the line while the Gorillia’s would hit 11-21. Wagner would own the glass with a 38-34 advantage but would commit 16 turnovers compared to 11 from Gregory.Macy Koupal would lead all scorers with a game high 27 points, 4 boards, and dish out 4 assists. Abby Brunsing would also score double figures with 16 points, grab a 9 boards, and dish out 3 assists. Shalayne Nagel would chip in 6 points, get 3 steals, dish out a team high 8 assists and tie Brunsing for the team high 9 boards. Jayla Bruguier would add 6 points off the bench. Kya Kjeldgaard would add 4 points and 4 boards off the bench. Caydynce Olson would add 2 points, grab 6 boards, and dish out 4 assists. Ashlyn Koupal would also add 2 points, grab 4 boards, and dish out 3 assists. Sydney Cournoyer would round out the scoring with 1 point. “We did a great job of moving the basketball, finding shooters, being ready to shoot, and knocking down shots. We still need to continue to do a better job on rebounding. Defensively we have to talk better as they had three scorers knock down shots with us stride for stride. We still have to look for that inside outside presence but we did an awesome job of cutting and hitting those cutters. When you get 22 assists in a game that is great team work and ball distribution so I give credit to our players playing with in themselves.”
