GREER UNIT #11 AMERICAN LEGION MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES

American Legion Greer Post #11 held its monthly meeting on April 17th, with 25 Legion members and 4 SOL members in attendance. Also in attendance was Ellie Leines and family. Ellie is the daughter of Luci and Tracey Leines and is a 2nd grader. Ellie was awarded with a Good Deed/Youth Hero award by Legion Auxiliary. Chaplain Don Kotab then gave the invocation which was followed by a moment of silence for Arnold Horner and Sgt. Dennis B Morgan, who was a member of Co. A 153rd Bt. who was killed in combat 21 years ago today. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited by all followed by the Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion. Vice Commander John Crisman, standing in for Commander Rados, then called the meeting to order.

WAGNER COMMUNITY CLEANUP HELD

Every year the community of Wagner come together and dedicate one day as the Wagner Community Cleanup Day. This year it was held, Friday May 2nd at 8:30 a.m. Cleanup crews went house to house looking for curbside items such a: yard debris, furniture, mattresses, appliances, and scrap iron, left out to be picked up.

POPPY POSTER CONTEST

Congratulations to all of our winners. We are very proud of all of the K-3rd graders that participated. They did a wonderful job and were so creative. American Legion Auxiliary members have hung up posters at many business locations throughout Wagner. We could not have made this contest possible without the help of WCS elementary teachers and staff. This year there were 183 entries. It is hoped that the annual poppy contest will help educate our communities' youth about the importance of the poppy and what it means and represents. The poppy is a national symbol of remembrance for those soldiers and Veterans that have given their lives in service of keeping America safe during its times of war.

District Essay Winners

At the Spring meeting of the District 8 South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary, it was announced that Wagner had three district essay winners. Portlyn Jones won the seventh/eighth grade division; and Jaycee Martin and Hannah Holzbauer both won in the ninth/tenth grade division. All three essays will now move on to the state competition. Congratulations to Portlyn, Jaycee and Hannah!
