Macy Voigt struck out 11 batters as the starter led Avon past Winner 5-1 on Saturday. Voigt allowed one hit and one run over five innings while walking five. The Pirates got on the board in the first inning after Rilyn Thury homered to center field, scoring two runs. They extended their early lead with three runs in the bottom of the third thanks to RBI singles by Pria Sessler and Voigt.

However, they were stifled for the rest of the game and lost on a walk off single by Castlewood in the bottom of the fifth. Macy Voigt started the game for the Pirates. The starter gave up five hits and five runs over five innings, striking out five and walking four. Jordyn Voigt led Avon with two hits. Thury had two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 on the day. Three huge defensive plays were made by Abby Gretschmann, Kaydence Metzger, and Lexi Vanderlei which helped keep the Pirates in the game. A spectacular combination grab of a fly ball between Lexi Vanderlei and Kaeli Wallinga ended the fourth inning.
Read moreWagner Community School senior, Carter Smejkal has been competing in the Farm & Agribusiness Management (also known as Ag Business) competition of the FFA Career Development Events (CDE) for the past three years. Throughout this season’s competitions, Carter has exceled in Ag Business, receiving two first places (in Tri-Valley and Lennox) and a third place at the qualifying meet in Parkston. His third-place finish qualified Carter for the State FFA CDE competition. The South Dakota State FFA Convention was held April 3rd through the 5th in Brookings.
Read moreWhen I first moved to Brookings, the primary care physicians took care of their own patients in the hospital. We would round on patients in the morning before clinic or try to sneak over during lunch or after clinic. While I loved taking care of patients in the hospital, it was hard to juggle the responsibilities of both giving my attention to the patients in the hospital while seeing people in the clinic. Any time the hospital nurse had a question; my clinic nurse would have to interrupt a clinic visit or wait for me to between patients. This could lead to some less-than-ideal times where I was being pulled in multiple directions at once.
