BH COUNTY CHILD PROTECTION TEAM 2023-24 ACTIVITIES

The Bon Homme County Child Protection (CP) Team has been meeting throughout the school year to identify needs of families in the county and to find creative ways to provide for those needs. The CP team includes volunteer representatives from each schooldistrict(administrators, school counselors, and school psychologist), Rising Hope and Lewis and Clark Behavioral Health therapists, county legal/law enforcement, and area social service agencies. Wecollaborateonwaystoraise funds as needs arise in Bon Homme County, including the communities of Avon, Scotland, Springfield, Tabor, and Tyndall. As we meet, we are able to coordinate referrals for mental health counseling and family support. Our referrals come from school officials, law enforcement, teachers, and from family members who reach out for assistance.

RECOGNIZING AVON'S POLICE CHIEF THEODORE SMITH

National Police Week is observed this year on May 15th through May 21st. This is a week that offers honor, remembrance, and peer support for police officers. Police officers deserve to be honored and recognized for their dedication and hard work for their communities. Police Chief, Theodore Smith, is the lone officer of theAvonPoliceDepartment. Police Chief Smith has been in his current position for almost seven months in Avon. What Chief Smith enjoys most about being a part of law enforcement is the opportunity that the job allows him to make a difference in the community. Smith’s grandfather was the Chief of Police in Sturgis while Smith was growing up. Listening to his grandfather’s experiences as a police officer and chief stirred an interest in Smith. Smith also has his own personal training and experienceinlawenforcement from his training while in the National Guard. These are the top two reasons that Smith chose a career in law enforcement.

AVON PIRATE GIRLS SOFTBALL RESULTS

Avon 2 - Gayville/Volin 16 Avon Varsity pirates had trouble keeping up with Gayville Volin in a 16-2 loss on Monday. Gayville scored 5 in the first and then three in the top of the second. Avon pulled closeronaninsidetheparkHR by Rilyn Thury. That ended the scoring threat for Avon. Kaydence Metzger and Macy Voigt were on the hill for the Lady Pirates. Thury and Macy Voigt each collected two hits with Thury collecting both RBI’s.

MARK HUBER

Mark Steven Huber, 65, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, passed away peacefully in his sleep of a heart attack February 6, 2024. Mark was born November 2,1958, to Ruben and Arlene (Kracht) Huber in Wagner. Memorial services will be held May 31, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Andes. https:// www.schradercares.com/obituaries/ mark-huber Mark graduated from Andes Central High School in 1977. He continued his education at the School of Mines in Rapid City, South Dakota, earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1981 and later obtaining a master's degree in engineering.

Funeral services for Mariana (Acosta) Peters, 82, of Wagner, were held Wednesday May 1 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wagner. Burial will be at a later date in the ZCBJ Cemetery, rural Wagner. Peters Funeral Home of Wagner was in charge of arrangements.
