Pierre, S.D. December 1, 2023 - 251 South Dakota volunteer fire departments from across the state have been awarded grants totaling $5 million in funding for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Earlier this year, the South Dakota Legislature passed and Governor Noem signed HB 1127 appropriating state general funds to the Department of Public Safety creating the grant program to support local volunteer fire departments.

Read moreWagner Community School presented its first annual Kahomni/Round Dance Friday, December 1st. The event was open to the public and included special dances and contests, invited singers, prizes and vendors. The special dances and contests included female and male side step, kahomni, potato dance and the hand drum contest. Invited singers included Donavyn Williamson, Hehaka Akichita Elk Soldier, Mato Thomas and Jermaine Bell. Prizes were awarded for best moccasins, best ribbon skirt and shirt and best braids. The master of ceremony for the event was Gerald Zephier and stickman was Darrell Zephier. The event was held at the WCS auxiliary gym. Cultural Coordinator, Jimmy Sanchez was the organizer of the kahomni. Traditionally a kahomni dance was a dance that consisted of two people that two stepped to songs specifically made for the dance. It was a dance that was traditionally a way for young men to show respect to young women whom they were publicly courting with little contact. In recent years, the kahomni has been used as more of a social dance and gathering. They had a great turn out of participants and it was a fun evening had by all.
