For nearly 100 years, the Burlington train route meandered through the Black Hills. The train transported people, freight, mail, and livestock from town to town throughout the area. The original construction of the train route began in 1888, and within ten months the route was completed all the way to Edgemont. However, in the mid-1980s the train traffic came to a stop and the railroad was abandoned and ultimately removed.

On Wednesday, May 25th, we stopped by the Ft. Pierre Game, Fish, & Parks licensing office. Betsy and I were on the way to visit rancher friends where I have hunted for the past 53 years. I told the Game & Fish people that I was a technological klutz, and that I was having trouble submitting my deer license application on my computer. They told me that the system was broken down and gave me a hard copy application. One thing I read on that application really bothered me and I’ll quote it. “NOTE: In 2023, all applications must be submitted on line.”

The YST Law enforcement auxiliary gym in Lake Andes came alive during this past week of June 6-10 with the dancing feet of tiny tots and older youth under the enthusiastic teaching of Jackie Bird. Jackie is a loved performer and a grandmother who brings alive Native designs, songs, stories, hoop dancing and special performances. Her last visit was at the 17th Annual Waterlily Storytelling Institute in March 2022 at Andes Central.

If your children missed Summer Programming at the Library last week it is not too late to join us! In order to attend the Incentive trip in Yankton at the conclusion of programming a student must attend 21 of the 30 sessions and complete a summer reading program. The subject of the programming is as follows: Mondays-Gardening Activities, Tuesdays-Food and Fun Activities, Wednesdays – Craft Day, Thursdays- STEAM activities, Fridays -Movie Day and Find a Book for the Weekend Activities.
