As spring rolls around, so does Prom…and a lot of responsibilities for the junior class. The theme of this year's 2022 Prom is Unlock the Enchanted Night. It is March 26 with the junior and senior class banquet at 6:00 p.m., Grand March at 7:30 p.m., and the dance from 8:30-11:30 p.m.

The Lady Raiders traveled to Brookings last Wednesday to partake in the State A Girls basketball tournament. The support Wagner had made it feel like three home games. Wagner would take on the Red Cloud Crusaders in the opening round of the tournament that was loaded from top to bottom. Both teams would start out fast as the Crusaders would hold a 18-15 lead after the first. Both teams would score 17 in the second as the Crusaders would hold a 35-32 lead. With a shot at the buzzer Red Cloud would post a 12 point lead entering the 4th and would increase it to 14 early. Wagner would begin to chip away hitting big shot after big shot and shutting down the potent Red Cloud offense and out score the Crusaders 22-4 in the 4th and post a 68-62 victory. Emma Yost would post a double-double with 17 points and 12 boards. She would also dish out 5 assists and come away with 2 steals. Ashlyn Koupal would also net 17 off the bench and grab 7 boards and dish out 3 assists. Shalayne Nagel would be the third Raider in double figures while also posting a double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. She would also dish out 4 assists. Lydia Yost would add 9 points off the bench, grab 4 boards and dish out 2 assists. Macy Koupal would chip in 6, grab 5 boards, and dish out 5 assists. Eve Zephier would round out the scoring with 3 points, grab 4 boards and dish out 2 assists. Wagner was 25-56 for 45% from the field while holding Red Cloud to 38% from the floor. Wagner crashed the boards with 43 against only 26 from Red Cloud. Wagner committed 15 turnovers against 5 from Red Cloud. “Talk about two teams lighting it up on the score board. 20 made threes, 10 from each team. We did a great job controlling the glass the second half get 12 offensive rebounds that half and finishing with 16. Defensively in the 4th we locked down once we fouled out Derby. The girls were resilient and just kept working to finish the game.”

We were able to come together for a few wins while improving and playing teams tough all season. I am really proud of the leadership shown by the seniors on our team and how they modeled putting forth 100% effort. We had kids step into new roles and really help out the team. Thank you to Coach Wince and Coach Fathke for their help with the program and a big thank you to the community for all their support. Looking forward to a productive offseason and improving next season."

On March 3 Avon cheerleaders and student body held a pep rally to send the girls basketball team off to the SoDak 16 in Huron against the DeSmet Bulldogs.

Going into post play, the Lady Pirates were third seed in Class B Region 6. The quarterfinal game took place in Avon on February 22 against the Marty Braves. The Lady Pirates ran away with a 72-29 win which set them up to play Platte-Geddes on a neutral court. The Panthers met up with the Lady Pirates in the Corn Palace for the Semifinal game. A 42-28 loss sent the Panthers home and the Lady Pirates to the SoDak 16 game! The number two seed DeSmet Bulldogs, and the fifteen seed Lady Pirates played in the Huron Arena on March 3. After a tough fight, the Lady Pirates fell just short with a final score of 44-57.

This year's elementary Winter Olympics was held on February 24. Lindsey Fathke, 6th grade teacher, was in charge of this year's Olympics. It was successful because of the help of Student Body council members Samantha Brodeen, Katie Gretschmann, Reece Loewe, and Tiffany Pelton, as well as the assistance of PE teacher, Mr. Tim Leibel, who supplied all of the equipment. They were able to have a great turnout this year.
