The Lady Raiders took another long road trip to start out the season to take on #5 Class A Sioux Falls Christian. Another state tournament team from a year ago, the Chargers brought back a plethora of players and talent. Wagner stepped up the challenge as Lydia Yost scored off the tip, Braxton Nedved nailed a bomb from beyond the arc, and Macy Koupal slashed and scored to put the Raiders up 7-0. They are a big school that was a state contender a year ago. Lydia, Braxton and Macy came out ready and made them pay for the double-triple teams that they were bringing before we got touches on the inside. We were all beasts on the boards! Something we took to heart from last game and we did a great job of boxing out. The one area we need to clean up is turnovers. We have left a lot of hidden points in the past few games. Teams are taking 30 more shots a game than us but on the other hand we are shooting double of their percentage. We need to get 10 more shots, make 5 and games can get really out of control. Something we just need to continue to work on. Great job ladies!”

In this tournament they allowed unattached wrestlers so we had twenty kids competing on the day. Going in I was looking for them to go out compete and wrestle hard from the beginning of the tournament to the end. These tournaments are long and are a grind at times so it is hard to stay focused but they responded well. At the end of the day they earned themselves a team Championship and should be proud of the way they wrestled as a team. Looking forward the competition is only going to get tougher so they need to keep wrestling hard and keep improving.

Wagner would commit 17 turnovers to Winners 13. “This was a great test for us to start the year. They are an experienced team that brought back everyone from a year ago that won 15 games throughout the season. We played with some jitters early but thought I we responded well, especially being on the road. We do need to clean up our passing in the full court and half court. Winner shot nearly 20 more times than we did due to our turnovers and the offensive boards they got. On our possessions in the first half where we turned it over we didn’t get shots in transition and turned it over instead. All learning experiences and now we move on to the next game!”
