The Lady Gorilla’s came over to Wagner last Tuesday in girls basketball action. Wagner would show no mercy to the start of this game as they would go on a 20-0 to start the game. They would hold a 44-12 advantage at half and coast to a 75-29 victory. Ashlyn Koupal would lead all scorers with 26 points. Shalayne Nagel would be a stat stuffer with 21 points, 9 boards, a game high 4 steals, and 2 assists. Emma Yost would record her third straight double-double with 16 points, 10 boards, 5 assists, and 2 blocks. Macy Koupal would finish with 5 points, 3 boards and a game high 11 assists. Lydia Yost and Caydynce Bernie would each finish with 3 points. Eve Zephier would round out the scoring with 1 point, dish out 8 assists, and grab 3 boards. Wagner would shoot 30-57 from the field for 53% while holding the Gorillas to just 28% shooting. Wagner would out rebound Gregory 37-16. The Raiders would turn the ball over 7 times compared to 13 from the Gorilla’s. “We did an excellent job on the glass. Last year we gave up a lot of second chance points to them. They have been getting a lot of second chance points this year. We limited them to one offensive rebound the entire game. That is team box out. We got to run a lot of specials and different looks on offense and were very successful at converting them. Another great team win and we just got to keep moving forward one game at a time.”

It starts with region and conference foe, Parkston. Wagner found themselves down 2-0 to start the game and then went on a 23-5 run to finish the first quarter up 23-7. Parkston outscored the Raiders 9-7 in the second cutting the lead to 30-16 at half. Wagner exploded in the 3rd out scoring the Trojans 24-4 and posting a 54-20 lead going into the 4th. Parkston rallied somewhat in the 4th but fell 59-35. Wagner shot 44% from the floor while Parkston shot 30%. Wagner again controlled the glass 30-19, dished out 17 assists and turned the ball over 15 times. Parkston committed 23 turnovers. Ashlyn Koupal led all scorers with 24 points, 6 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals and a block. Macy Koupal was the only other Raider in double figures posting a double-double with 10 points, 10 boards, 4 assists and 2 steals. Lydia Yost netted 9 points, grabbed 2 boards and 2 steals. Emma Yost finished with 7 points, 8 boards, 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Eve Zephier added 7 points and 2 steals. Shalayne Nagel finished with 2 points, 3 boards, 2 steals and a team high 6 assists. “This is always a very physical game. Our posts took a beating inside as they played very good help defense. Offensively we reacted on the fly in the third quarter and got things rolling again. We out scored them 49-11 in quarters 1 and 3. We have to do a little better job in all quarters as in 2 and 4 we get out scored 12-24. Defensively we hedged hard on screens and limited them to one shot. Nice team effort again.”

The Red Raiders were led in scoring by Chris Nelson who had 17 points and recorded 9 assists. Matt Link added 12 points and Glenn Cournoyer 11. Wagner extended their lead in the second half and won the game 46-21. Parker Petry was the leading scorer for the boys with 16 points. The Red Raiders played better defense in the second half. Wagner cut Gregory’s lead to 3 but could not get any closer. Gregory won the game by a final score of 58-48. Carter Cournoyer had a team high 12 points, Matt Link an Preston McFayden each scored 9. Chris Nelson added 7, Glenn Cournoyer 5, Ted Slaba 4 and Joey Cournoyer 2.
