One late summer day, fresh out of residency and seeing patients for the first time as a full-fledged family physician, I examined a young man who had a fever, fatigue, and a bad headache. Considering the time of year, influenza was low on the list of possibilities, and COVID-19 did not yet exist. After a physical exam and listening to his story, I ordered some tests, which resulted in a diagnosis of West Nile virus.

The Wagner Waves swim team competed in Platte for the James Valley Swimming League championship meet on Thursday and Friday, July 14th and 15th. Trophies were given for placings first through fourth in each age group, but the team placed several kids. Ellie Leines placed fourth, Willow Soukup placed 6th, and Avieleigh Slaba placed 16th in the 6 and under girls' group, and Maverick Kafka placed 6th for the boys' group. Windsor Soukup took home first place for boys' 8 and under, and Brandon Frei placed 8th. Ronan Hollmann also participated in the championship meet. Kennedi Cuka received third place, Audrey Gabel took fourth, and Collins Kafka placed 14th for the girls' 8 and under age group. In the 9 and 10 year old group of boys, Koy Kjeldgaard placed second, Grayson Knebel placed third, and Cooper Slaba placed fourth. Isaiah Moad and Cooper Kafka tied for 11th place. Chasen Simonsen also participated in the meet. Clarah Soukup placed second, Emma Turner placed third, and Hallie Roberts placed 14th for girls. Also participating in the meet in this age group was Aaliyah Youngstrom, Lydia Frei, Lauren Von Eschen, Raelynn Van Duysen, and Ava Turner. Radek Kotab placed third in the 11 and 12 year old age group for boys, and Connor Gabel placed 10th, Ethan Gabel placed 17th, Robert Frei placed 18th, and Jaxton Hill placed 20th. In the girls' age 11 and 12 age group, Tegan Langdeaux placed 6th, Brianna Fuchs placed 8th, Eva Kjeldgaard placed 17th, and Taelyn Knebel placed 18th. Emmalyn Leines also participated in the championship meet in this age group. Shea Kjeldgaard placed first overall for 13-14 year old boys. Presley Slaba placed 8th and Jessica Barnett placed 12th for girls. Ryan Langdeaux also competed in the meet. Jackson Rolston placed first overall for the 15 and 16 year old boys; Kya Kjeldgaard tied for first place, Madi Knebel tied for third, and McKenzie Fuchs placed 8th for the girls. DJ Schroeder placed first overall for the 17 and 18 year old boys' group. Gannon Knebel placed first in the boys' open category, and Cadee Nelson placed second in the girls' open group.

The July 20th Rotary meeting began with a delicious steak meal prepared by Super Foods. Rotarian Scott McAdaragh did an excellent job with the steaks. There were no guests present as we normally do not have a program for steak day. The losing attendance team, which was the Brunsing Team paid for all the steaks which is our customary way of enjoying a meal and encouraging the losing team to do better!

Wagner Building & Supply held their second annual golf tournament on Saturday, July 18 at the WBS Open, which was located at Randall Hills Golf Course in Pickstown. The much-needed rain didn't allow for golfers to complete a full 18 holes, but many golfers walked away with cash and prizes! It was a fun day, and we couldn't have asked for a better turnout. Many of the teams were locals, but we had golfers from Sioux Falls, Nebraska, and Iowa!
Read moreAmerican Legion Greer Post #11 held its monthly meeting on July 21st, 2022 at the Post Home with 26 members in attendance. Commander Rados introduced John Crisman, who presented a very interesting story about his relative, Tony Skorpik. Skorpik was a WWII veteran who served in the Army Air Corps. He was shot down over Austria and was held as a prisoner of war for 10 months. Commander Rados thanked John for sharing his story and also thanked the cooks for the outstanding meal. Commander Clayton Rados then called the members to attention. Chaplain Donald Kotab gave the invocation, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. The Preamble to the Constitution of the American Legion was recited by all members. Commander Rados then called the meeting to order.

The Tabor Legion Baseball team with a 19-7 record headed into Region play against Mt Vernon/Plankinton Corsica-Stickney on Tuesday, July 19 in Menno. Tabor was on the bottom side of a final 11-8 score, but battled their way back defeating Scotland Menno 11-10, Parkston 10- 6; and MVP Corsica-Stickney 10-1. Saturday’s championship action had the Tabor team facing Platte Geddes and taking control of that game in a 14-0 score. Tabor would again take on Platte Geddes, but a homerun with one on base in the bottom of the 7th put them on the downside of a final 4-2 score. Members of the team include (L-R) Nolan Dvorak, Dustin Honomichl, and Nolan Carda, all from Wagner.
