IHANKTONWAN NATION COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS

The Ihanktonwan Nation Community Service Awards were created by the Yankton Sioux Tribe as an annual recognition to honor person(s)/ groups who make significant contributions to the Yankton Sioux Tribe memberships. This service award is given in memory of Richard Leasure. The honoree’s contributions can be made through giving their time, actions, talents and or dedication. The honoree(s) selected should serve as a role model for compassion, service, strive to make the Yankton Sioux Reservation a better place and have a passion for helping others in the community. Honorees can be a tribal or non-tribal member. Sponsors of this annual event are the Richard Leasure family, Ft. Randall Casino and the Yankton Sioux Tribe.

SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS TO PARKSTON

The Wagner Red Raiders wrapped up their 2024 season on Friday, May 17th with a 5-15 loss to Parkston. Mara Wright started in the circle for Wagner, walking two. Hannah Holzbauer finished the last two innings for the Red Raiders walking seven and striking out four.

WCS FRESHMEN OFFER FREE SOFTBALL CAMP

A free Wagner Red Raiders softball camp was offered to 1st grade through 6th graders on Tuesday, May 14th after school. The camp was put on by Wagner Community School high school freshmen, Braxton Nedved and Shaelee Turner. As part of their Workplace Technical Skills class with Mrs. Tera Koupal, the students had to do a class project where they were required to help others. Several other students from the class were doing sport camps, so Branxton and Shaelee thought with it being softball season and both playing softball since they were in 10U that it would be a fun project for the pair. As SD high school softball has only been sanctioned for the past two seasons, Wagner Community School has never had a softball camp. The girls thought it would be a great idea to put on the first softball camp ever.

CHARLES MIX COUNTY 4-HER’S EXCEL AT STATE SHOOT

Youth from the Charles Mix County Shooting Sports program qualified for State Shoot. They traveled to Ft. Pierre April 26-28. Charles Mix County was well represented, as there were many awards received.

BREEN RETIRES FROM WCS AFTER 34 YEARS

Becky Breen has been teaching first grade and kindergarten for the Wagner School District for the past 34 years. Becky has always said that she would retire from teaching when her youngest child graduated from high school. As her youngest, Jhett, is a WHS 2024 Class Graduate, Becky held true to her words and is officially retiring from teaching this 2023-2024 school year. She wants to end her teaching career still having a love for the students and staff.

MILLS RETIRES FROM WCS

Sandy Mills has been a part of the Wagner Community School staff for the past 27 years, beginning her WCS career in 1997. Sandy has been a part of the food service team as a dishwasher and server. Sandy has decided that as the 2023-2024 school year comes to a close, so does her time at WCS. She is officially retiring. Sandy decided that it was time to retire in order to be able to help her mom.
