When Eliza Blue mailed me her manuscript about life on a West River ranch, I admit that I had some skepticism. The document sat unread in my inbox for a few days. Do readers want another perspective on ranching life, I wondered?

Sometimes when I’m in my own little dream world, I get to thinking it should be me instead of a guy like David Petzal who should be writing for the big magazines.

Last I heard, 20 million Americans had not received their stimulus checks. In the three months since the CARES Act passed Congress, I’ve been patient. South Dakotans have been patient – all while waiting for the help some of them desperately need. My patience has run low.

I may be biased, but I think South Dakota is one of the most beautiful places in the world. This week Falls Park in Sioux Falls was rated the 2nd best city park in the country. It should’ve been ranked #1! But this achievement is just the latest acknowledgement of South Dakota’s beauty.

Congratulations, class of 2020. I can’t gloss over the fact that these are unusual times. This isn’t a normal high school graduation. And this hasn’t been a normal semester. I know this is a wonderful time of the year when the spring season rolls around.

South Dakota’s number one industry is agriculture, and for years, farmers and ranchers have been dealing with difficulties including trade uncertainty, low commodity prices and price disparities between what they receive versus what the consumer pays at the grocery store for the product.

I recently heard from a column reader who wanted to see more about guns in this column. Because I know that not everyone cares about guns, I’ll write about this fascination in moderation although I think that most everyone will find today’s column interesting.
