Walter married Alice (Hall) Schaffer on July 2, 1971, in Mound City. Together they made their home on Walters family farm east of Mound City and were blessed with a daughter Tina. Walter remained on the farm until he entered the Good Samaritan Center of Wagner in early 2026 to be close to family.
When he wasn’t tending to the crops and livestock. Walter loved to go to the hobby and pioneer power shows around the area and learn about old engines. As a selftaught machinist he would spend all his free time in the basement recreating and building model airplane and hot air engines from scratch that he would encounter at these shows. Walter also loved taking on the challenge of fixing old guns.
Thankful for having shared his life are special friend Sandra Bauer of Mound City: Grandsons Bradley and Luke Dangel, son in law Michael Dangel all of Lake Andes and brother Milbert Schaffer of Pierre.
Walter is preceded in death by wife Alice Schaffer of 41 years, daughter Tina Dangel, parents Willie and Erna Schaffer and sister Irene Fenske.
