When I was a kid, my grandparents took me fishing at the Lake Norden spillway, a passage that allows water from Lake Norden to flow underneath Highway 28 and into lakes Mary, John, Albert and points beyond. I don’t recall being excited by the outing. Fishing had never appealed to me.

While we South Dakotans are among the most fortunate people in the world, we often take things for granted without fully realizing just what we have. Such is the case with our turkey hunting. South Dakota is frequently recognized as the top state in the nation to hunt turkeys.

My grandmother was a lively, caring, wonderful woman, who remained very active late in her life. One spring day, after an unusual April blizzard, she stepped out of her apartment on her way to her weekly bridge game.

The SDSU Extension office is pleased to announce that Michael J. Koranda has filled the role of 4-H Youth Program Advisor March 1. Michael will be shared between Bon Homme and Charles Mix Counties and when in Charles Mix, he will office at Courthouse in Lake Andes.

Success is created from personal interest, the caring about an idea, creativity, honest effort by those involved, proper planning, hard work, a certain amount of luck and people working together for the same positive goal in mind.

PROVERBS 10:12 "Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins."(KJV) We are living in a time where hate is being the thing to do. Around out country it is being pushed--to hate whites, hate blacks, hate Spanics, hate Asians, and if that is not enough--hate your neighbors.

PROVERBS 9:9,10 " Give instruction to a wise man, and he will yet be wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy is understanding."(KJV) Websters dictionary says: Wisdom--the quality of being wise.

I recently had a big discovery – the main thing holding back our vision of thriving rural communities is the extinction of collaborative leadership. Yes, it’s true. Truly collaborative leaders are rare in our communities.
