Avon had two girl wrestlers on the Bon Homme/Scotland/ Avon girl’s wrestling team this 2023-2024 wrestling season. Ashley Tolsma and Hope Kemnitz were both first year wrestlers on the team. This is the fourth year since South Dakota first sanctioned girls wrestling in 2021. Even though it was the fourth year of SDHSAA sanctioned wrestling, in Avon this was not necessarily common knowledge. The 20232024 season was the first year that Avon has had any girl wrestlers.

They all should be proud of the season that they had, with some falling short of their goals they need to keep their heads high and start working for the next season. Congratulations to Peyton and Britney on their State Titles. These girls are hard workers and the dedication they have for this sport is something special to be a part of. The seniors of the group Jackson Caba placing 5th and TylerTjeerdsma6th.Thesetwo guys had a solid tournament and I felt they put together a few of the best matches of the season wrestling some of the top guys in the State. These guys have been a staple to this program and have nothing to hang their heads about. Read moreWagner played Platte-Geddes Friday night at home. Points were hard to come by for both teams. Wagner trailed 10-5 after the first period and 14-21 at half time. The Raiders cut the lead by 1 point in the third period but could not get any closer. Wagner lost by a final score of 31-40. Joey Cournoyer Jr scored 13 points and 6 rebounds. Paker Petry had 6 points and 7 rebounds, Brady Cournoyer added 4 points Preston McFayden and Jesse Zephier each had 3 points and Carter Cournoyer scored 2.

The Watchdogs jumped out to a 19-17 lead after the first period and led Wagner 30-23 at halftime. Wagner fell behind by as many as 12 points in the fourth period before storming back and taking a late 1 point lead after Preston McFayden scored a layup and was fouled, Preston made the free throw to give Wagner its first lead 47-46. Wagner had trouble getting stops on defense late in the game and Beresford pulled out the victory 54-50. Preston McFayden led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points, Brady Cournoyer scored 9, Carter Cournoyer and Joey Cournoyer Jr each scored 7. Parker Petry and Jesse Zephier each had 6 points, Javian Pesicka had 4.
