Wilma Ashes, 77, of Lake Andes died Thursday, June 26, in Portland, OR. Funeral services were Saturday, July 5, at the White Swan Community Center in Lake Andes. Burial is in the Greenwood Presbyterian Cemetery, rural Greenwood.Wake services will begin Thursday at the White Swan Community Center. Peters Funeral Home in Wagner was in charge of arrangements.

Wilma Ruth Hermine Ashes, lovingly known as Mema passed away peacefully on June 26. She was born to Francis and Hazel (Simmons) Ashes on November 20th, 1947, in Wagner. She is the 5th of twelve siblings: Donnie, Ray, Gary, Francine, Natalie, Marlin, Ellen, Kerry, Sophia (Cissy), Ida, and Missy. She was a beloved mother, sister, auntie, cousin, grandmother and friend.

Wilma began her education in Greenwood, and graduated in 1967 from Andes Central High School in Lake Andes. She later pursued her higher education at the College of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas. She served in the South Dakota National Guard for a brief time. In 1975, Mema welcomed her first son, Anthony, followed by her second son, Weldon in 1984. She raised them with unwavering love, guidance, and strength. Her career was rooted in public service and education, as she held various positions throughout her life – most notably she opened her heart and home to others as a foster parent, extending her care to children in need and offering them a place of safety, guidance, and unconditional love. At the Ihanktonwan Community College, Wilma served and loved her tribal college for 20 years. Wilma was not only a devoted mother, but also a mentor and educator, who impacted countless lives. She inspired students to complete their degrees, pursue their goals, and believe in themselves. Many have stated if it wasn’t for her, they wouldn’t have made it – and always kept them fed.

Wilma adored her granddaughters Antonia & Jada. Her love for them was boundless, as she poured her heart into their lives. She is survived by her sons, Anthony (Pam) Ashes, Weldon Thomas: her granddaughters Jada Ashes and Antonia (Michael) Roling. Great-granddaughters: Brianna Rae, Taylor Elizabeth, Elayna Jae, Rayla Ann, Khaleesi Grae. Great Grandsons Alakai Anthony and Elijah Franklynn. Her beloved siblings, adopted siblings Pat Troyer, Michael Blevins, Pam Redlightning, and Ella Rae Stone, and many nieces and nephews, she leaves behind a legacy of compassion, education, and strength that will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Hazel (Simmons) Ashes. Five sisters; and three brothers.
