STATE As I enter my final weeks as governor, many people are asking me to reflect on my time in office. I’m not a person who worries much about a “legacy.” I just hope that I have left things a little better than I found them.

Coming from a dairy background, I was well versed in livestock tracking- every birth was recorded, every breeding date, and when the animal may come back into heat.

Back on the farm, we had a big dining room table that sat against one wall most of the year. On Thanksgiving, Dad pulled that table out into the middle of the room. Mom covered it with the good tablecloth and set the good dishes.

Two weeks ago I suggested that crop herbicides and pesticides might have something to do with our struggling pheasant population. I received a well written letter from a Fulton area farmer with regard to my intimation. He made some excellent points.

It must be Monday. My fingers are about two steps behind my brain while I’m working this keyboard. Perhaps if I drink a second cup of Folger’s coffee, I will get things coordinated. In the meantime, I was quite impressed by my grandkids.

As you read today’s column, I’ll be West River deer hunting in Lyman County. It’s new country for me, I’m excited about it, and I’ll write about that next week.

As my term comes to a close, Linda and I have been planning for our future outside the Governor’s office. One of the things we are most looking forward to is spending more time with friends, family and loved ones.
