Hello District 19 – The fourth week of the 100th Legislative Session marked the halfway point of what has been a very unique and exciting Session. December’s tax revenue numbers came in this week and were lower than expected from the Holiday Season.

The pace of the session has really picked up this week. 269 House bills and 219 Senate bills have been introduced. Committees are diligently working to give each bill its fair hearing. Education savings accounts, also referred to as school vouchers, have been one of the biggest issues this session.

LOCAL 4-H MEMBERS AMONG THOSE ATTENDING 4-H NATIONAL ROUNDUP IN DENVER

Three teams represented South Dakota at the annual 4H Western National Roundup in Denver last week, from January 8th through the 10th. The Hippology team consisted of Lila Stutzman of Bon Homme, Josey Nold of Brookings and Tarynn Torsney of Bon Homme. Hippology is the studyofhorses.

Representative Marty Overweg Well, the 17th Legislature Day is in the books, the deadline to drop bills is past, and if you’re a legislator here comes Crossover Day.

We started off our week in the House Education Committee with a room full of concerned citizens. Our first bill that we considered was calling for volunteer chaplains in the Public Schools. This was going to be a problem for schools like Colome where I think that the ministers are from out of town.

Week four of the legislative session was the only week that consisted of five days; the rest are four day weeks. The session is almost halfway done. Senate Bill 82 would have required Congressional action for the National Guard to be deployed by the Federal Government.
