Guy R. Cooke, Sr., 76, of Marty, died Thursday, September 17, 2026 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services were Monday, September 21 at the Marty Community Center. Burial was in the Holy Fellowship Episcopal Cemetery, rural Greenwood.

Guy Richard Cooke, Sr. was born on June 11, 1950. He attended Marty Indian School and later married Audrey on July 3, 1971. Together, Guy and Audrey built a life and raised their family. Guy was the father of Douglas, Guy Jr., and Brian, and in 1996, their family grew with the adoption of Nicole and Robert.

Guy was a hardworking man who spent many years working as a heavy equipment operator. He also served as the Security Director at Fort Randall Casino, and served on the Yankton Sioux Tribe Business and Claims Committee.

A big part of Guy’s life was fastpitch softball. Guy played for the Renegades and the Masters and was later honored for his accomplishments with induction into the South Dakota Fastpitch Hall of Fame as a pitcher. Those who stepped up to the plate against Guy knew his knuckleball well. Many swung and missed, only to be met with Guy’s familiar smirk after he sat them down.

Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Emma; his wife, Audrey; his sons, Douglas and Brian; and his siblings, John Sr., Joseph Sr., Virgil Sr., Francis, Peter Jr., Dorothy, Eldoth, Doris Jean, and Faith; grandson Faron; and granddaughter Ti Tuwiyan Kan Win.

He is survived by his children, Guy Jr., Robert, and Nicole; his grandchildren: Ahmarie, Jazen, Antwon and Andrew; his three great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many friends and relatives.
